August 15, 2008 Digital artist Marek Rys wins our third B-58.com "Can Do" AwardWe are pleased to present the B-58.com "Can Do" Award to Marek Rys for digitally modeling the B-58 in exceptional detail, including the interiors of all three cockpit areas. We've created a page featuring his work. UPDATE: 8/19/2008 Marek has provided additional images which may now be viewed from his page. | May 12, 2008 BRATS: Our Journey HomeThe DVD "BRATS: Our Journey Home" is the first documentary film that addresses what it was like to grow up in a military household and how this military childhood affects many people throughout their adult lives. Donna Musil has made this exceptional film casting a light on what life is like growing up in a military home. U.S. military BRATS share intimate memories about their unique childhoods - growing up on military bases around the world, then struggling to fit into an American lifestyle with which they have little in common. Narrated and featuring songs by Kris Kristofferson. Interviews include General Norman Schwarzkopf. It's hard to imagine a military BRAT'S childhood. Moving from base to base around the world, they are at home everywhere - and nowhere. There are 1.2 million children being raised in the military today. An estimated 15 million Americans are former BRATS. This unusual combination of experiences has created a cultural identity so powerful, it crosses all lines of race, gender, age, and class. Most brats, however, don't even know they belong to a separate subculture - they just feel "different" somehow, from their fellow Americans. The similarities they've discovered are astounding - from seemingly innocuous personality quirks to major values, choices, expectations about life. Some of these psychological legacies are inspiring, others bittersweet. But for many, reconnecting with their fellow brats and recognizing their unique heritage has been the first time they've felt like they belonged, the first "hometown" they've ever known - each other. Highly recommended. |
March 10, 2008 AlphaSim Rutan Model 61 Long-EZ previewAlphaSim has released a detailed model of the Rutan Long-EZ. It's not a Hustler, but it is certainly another milestone in flight simulation. So why is this on a B-58 website? |
January 19, 2008 New R/C B-58 Hustler Project AnnouncedButch Sickels' previous B-58 Hustler flying scale models were without a doubt the most advanced Hustler models ever constructed. See our model page for details on the prior project. Now Butch and his company, R S Model Fabrications have announced that they are going to build a new B-58 model with turbine engines and try to break a model speed record. Butch estimates that it is going to cost about $50,000 to do all the work, and is actively seeking sponsors for the project. R S Models can be reached at (817) 223-0779 or from their website. We will post any information we receive about this ambitious project and wish Butch and company every success! |
December 23, 2007 Flight Simulator X Acceleration Expansion Pack includes Hustler contentKudos to Microsoft for including a brief mention of the Convair B-58 Hustler in their latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. There is a mission where you use a helicopter to recover pieces of a B-58 out on the Edwards photo test range. Hmmm, wonder which one that could be? Last time we checked, old long-nose was in one piece, more or less. In this "mission" the B-58 is carved up into little pieces and your job is to move it to a restoration shop. Might be a good idea with the real one! |

July 15, 2007 Butch Sickels, Paul Stelly, and Lynn McCauley win our second B-58.com "Can Do" AwardWe are pleased to present the B-58.com "Can Do" Award to Butch Sickels (aircraft), Paul Stelly (landing gear), and Lynn McCauley (original landing gear design) for designing, constructing, and flying radio control B-58 Hustler models. We were lucky enough to hear from them recently about their modeling projects (possibly the most difficult aircraft to model) and learn a little about their efforts to get a Hustler back in the air. Our model page provides some photos and links to video of the first Hustlers back in the air in decades! We are in Butch, Paul, and Lynn's debt for their efforts to keep the Hustler alive. |

November 28, 2006 First Flight AlphaSim repaint availableTo commemorate Beryl Erickson's first flight of the B-58 Hustler, I have created a repaint of the prototype XB-58, serial number 55-660 in the original company colors as the aircraft was painted on the day of the first flight. Many thanks to Frank Safranek for giving me such an excellent starting point, and for his help and patience. I stand on the shoulders of giants... This repaint can be downloaded for free for use with AlphaSim's B-58 Hustler package. What better way to remember that day than to take the active at Carswell AFB for a reenactment of that first flight? Be sure to read Mr. Erickson's account of this historic flight in the following news item before trying it yourself. And remember, no afterburners and no pod on that first flight! |

February 9, 2006 Military Channel features the B-58The Military Channel aired a one hour Wings At War episode entitled "B-58 Hustler" on January 31, 2006 and again on February 3, 2006. Calls to the network relations office failed to reveal any information about this program, other than it is not available for purchase at this time. The office was unable to identify even the name of the independent producer of the program, as strange as that seems! If you're interested in this program, you might want to contact the Discovery Channel, which owns the Military Channel. If you learn anything, please contact us. We would like to get a copy for our library of B-58 memorabilia. |
